Fine Craft Collective

About

Welcome!

We are excited to be expanding our Fine Craft Collective show to both a larger gallery space and an on-line audience in 2009.

History:

The Fine Craft Collective started as part of a seasonal craft fair in Northfield, MN six years ago and has grown into an alternative co-operative business model for regional artisans. The majority of support in our locale goes to two-dimensional and performance art exclusively. Leanne Stremcha, a jewelry artist, saw the need for a professional environment featuring artisans working in functional and decorative objects. The gallery show she created is now organized, staffed, and promoted almost entirely by those showing work in the gallery space.  In addition to retail staffing, the design, display, book-keeping, and event catering are all done by members of the show. Due to the volunteer hours contributed by the artisans, the monetary overhead for the show is low, allowing those selling work to benefit more directly from the sale of their wares.

Current Show:

As the show has grown each year by sub-leasing different spaces around downtown Northfield for the months of November and December, emerging and established artisans have brought new ideas and skills to developing the show. The 2009 show of 18 artisans is housed in a gallery space of about 900 sq. ft. at 200 Division St. in Northfield, and offers a unique opportunity for artisans and the community to intersect.

Community and Shopping Local:

Not only does this show offer artisans an opportunity to show in a professional gallery space, it also allows for members of the community to meet them, learn about their work, and support the local economy. More than just the personal touch of an object made by hand, this co-operative gallery gives a personal connection between artisans and shoppers. A member of the show is there every day so that they can dialogue about the work – gain ideas and offer insight.  Shoppers can see a variety of goods for special gifts and everyday life, and know that their purchase will directly support their community. The more research that is done about buying local, the more we can all see how local purchases, especially of goods that are also locally produced, help keep our towns and neighborhoods thriving.
