Fine Craft Collective

A cooperative sale featuring talented local artists

About

Welcome!

Celebrating 20 years! We are excited for the 2023 Fine Craft Collective, once again offering a unique opportunity for artisans and the community to intersect.

History

The Fine Craft Collective started as part of a seasonal craft fair in Northfield, MN twenty years ago and has grown into an alternative co-operative business model for regional artisans. Leanne Stremcha, a jewelry artist, saw the need for a professional environment featuring artisans working in functional and decorative objects, as the majority of support in our locale primarily went to two-dimensional and performance art. The gallery show she created is now organized, staffed, and promoted almost entirely by those showing work in the gallery space.  In addition to retail staffing, the design, display, book-keeping, and event catering are all done by members of the show. Due to the volunteer hours contributed by the artisans, the monetary overhead for the show is low, allowing those selling work to benefit more directly from the sale of their wares.

Current Show

The Fine Craft Collective is a seasonal fine craft venue produced by Laura Heiman and Heather Lawrenz. As the show has grown each year by sub-leasing different spaces around downtown Northfield during November and December, emerging and established artisans have brought new ideas and skills to developing the show. The show of artisans opens November 10th through December 24, 2023 in the Main Gallery of the Northfield Arts Guild Gallery, 304 Division Street South in downtown Northfield, MN.

Community and Shopping Local

Not only does this show offer artisans an opportunity to show in a professional gallery space, it also allows for members of the community to meet them, learn about their work, and support the local economy. More than just the personal touch of an object made by hand, this co-operative gallery gives a personal connection between artisans and shoppers. A member of the show is there every day so that they can dialogue about the work, gain ideas, and offer insight.  Shoppers can see a variety of goods for special gifts and everyday life, and know that their purchase will directly support their community. The more research that is done about buying local, the more we can all see how local purchases, especially of goods that are also locally produced, help keep our towns and neighborhoods thriving.
